How Solar Power Tower’s Work with the Sun

As political debates over fossil fuels get heated, and celebrities are making their opinions known on the subject, we are learning more and more about the need for solar power. More specifically we are finding the need for the reduction of fossil fuels.

With the burning of fossil fuels comes an increase of gases that are being sent into the earth’s atmosphere which is effecting the global warming in a negative way. A way to combat this is through the use of solar power towers.

Solar power towers work by harnessing the suns energy as a source of renewable energy and allowing the reduction of these toxic gases. Solar power towers are also known as heliostat power plans that capture the energy of the sun and focus it on a collector tower. The solar power tower can store a huge amount of energy which is then converted into electricity and dispatched to power grids to be given to homes in the area. It can also store energy for future use as well. The stored energy is used in case of a long period of cloudy weather so that it continues to provide electricity.

The solar power towers have an advantage over other solar technologies because it uses very little space. Only about 1000 acres is needed to provide electricity to at least 50,000 homes which really isn’t a lot when you think about it. It can store 12 hours of power and allow for the power to flow freely when the sun is out. However, even though it provides adequate electricity, if there is an extended period of time where the sun doesn’t shine at all, it could affect the level of electricity delivered to the homes. That is why that with the use of this technology, the experts agree that there needs to be a combination of solar power from other forms that works with the solar power towers in order to ensure continued electricity.

The main reason there are more solar power towers being build is because of the large initial cost of building a solar power tower. Although what people are realizing is that cost will be recovered in just a few years of use, however, they are worried that the infrastructure might be too big of a liability until the costs can be recovered. Solar power technology is trying to find ways around this and to lessen the cost. Over the next few years we will be hearing much more about what we can do and what the experts can do to provide these kinds of solar power towers in a more cost effective way.
