Harnessing Solar Energy

With continued research and advancing technology, photovoltaic cells that are capable of creating electricity from sunlight are becoming increasingly more efficient. Improved technology has resulted in using concentrators to manufacture PV cells that occupy far less space and yet generate an increased quantity of electrical energy. The cost of electricity production employing solar energy is $4.0 per watt per house. This is almost 50% of the cost barely seventeen years ago.

Harnessing solar energy is an environmentally friendly way of generating electricity as there is a distinct absence of any toxic waste or toxic emissions. Also, considering that all that is required is that PV panels are placed on rooftops, this is also a very practical technique. Using solar energy is an excellent way to generate hot water that can be used for heating homes. Water that is encased in cells is heated and then transmitted through pipes to be used in several different ways.

Moreover photovoltaic collectors are capable of functioning even on days that are cloudy and overcast. They just amass adequate amounts of solar radiation from the amount that is available. Uni-Solar Company manufactured PV collectors are particularly advanced technologically and are capable of harnessing excess radiation that is available on bright, sunny days. This radiation is then stored and utilized on cloudy days.

PV systems comprising of an assortment of PV modules connected to a grid transfer the surplus energy that is left over on sunny days after the household requirements are met. This helps to reduce the grid’s dependence on environment-polluting conventional sources of energy and it also helps prevent outages. Small-sized communities have managed to centralize PV arrangements for supplying electricity within the community.

Realizing its economic as well as its environmental benefits, larger corporations have also started tapping into solar energy. Google, for example, has had a 1.6 MW solar-powered generator erected on the rooftop of its headquarters. With plans of installing its own solar power plant having a capacity of 100 MW, Wal-Mart is not far behind.

Governments of several companies including the US, Japan, Switzerland and Germany are boosting solar energy use by offering various tax breaks and subsidies for corporate as well as individual solar energy users. These tax breaks and subsidies are offered irrespective of whether solar energy is being used for producing electricity or for heating purposes.

With increasing availability of improved technology for amassing, converting and storing solar energy, even private investors are bound to acknowledge the financial advantages of investing in this green technology. Once this happens, solar energy will be poised to become increasingly popular with time.

Solar energy is non-polluting and environmentally friendly. It can literally deliver users from being at the mercy of constant price and power fluctuations.
